LANDSCAPE PLANNING
"August is the toughest month to do anything in the yard," said Jim Parker, owner of Parker Landscape Company. He recommends using this time to make plans for cool-weather projects. Parker offers these questions to consider as you make your to-do list:
What trees and plants are overgrown? Are there places you can trim so you can add plants below a tree?
Do you want to add another entertainment area?
Do you want to add more beds to eliminate lawn area?
Do you want more shade? If so, where do you need to plant a tree to get shade in the right place?
BED VERSUS TV
High-fashion beds have been popular for several seasons, but consumers found it challenging to watch TV through massive posts or footboards. Enter new beds, featuring large headboards paired with low footboards for unobstructed viewing. Even classic sleigh bed styles are offering lower profiles at the foot.

KID-PROOF MARKERS

PAINT TIP
The next time you begin a sponging or rag-rolling paint project, add a small amount of liquid dish detergent to your latex paint. The detergent will extend the amount of time you have to play with and manipulate the paint before it dries.
BACKYARD BIRDS
Attract birds to your yard or garden by providing them with nesting material in the spring. Place pieces of string (six inches or less), hair, dog hair, dry grass, pine needles, bark strips and weed or grape stalks in an open mesh container, then hang the container in an open outdoor area.
